It isn’t for nothing that one speaks of the treasure chest of evolution, as they house unique animals both above and below water. The land masses of the Galapagos archipelago have been protected since 1956, and in 1998 Ecuador established a marine reserve that stretches 40 nautical miles (a good 70 kilometers) into the Pacific.
